Zhores Alferov

Zhores Ivanovich Alferov (Russian Жорес Иванович Алфёров, scientific transliteration Zores Ivanovich Alferov, named after Jean Jaurès, born March 15, 1930 in Vitebsk, Belarus ) is a Russian physicist. He was director of the Joffe Institute in Saint Petersburg and in 2000 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics.

He conducted research in the field of semiconductor lasers. All of the semiconductor laser, for example scanners in cash registers, CD players or laser printers, based on the principles discovered by Alferov.

Alferov studied at the Electrotechnical Institute in Leningrad ( now St Petersburg) and was a visiting scientist in the United States. From 1987 to 2003 he was director of the " Physico-Technical Institute AF Joffe " in St. Petersburg until 2006, and its scientific director. Since 1989 he has been Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Nobel Prize in 2000, he was awarded half together with Herbert Kroemer (the other half went to Jack S. Kilby ) for work in semiconductor physics, which have become the basis of the information technology.

Alferov is since 1995 member of the Russian Duma and is currently president of her age. He is a Member of the Communist Party of Russia, and was provided in the case of the electoral victory of his party as a science minister.
