John Otho Marsh, Jr.

John Otho Marsh, Jr. ( born August 7, 1926 in Winchester, Virginia ) is a former American politician (Democratic Party). He represented the state of Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives and was 1981-1989 Defense Minister of the United States.

Marsh joined after attending school in 1944 the U.S. Army. He held the rank of Lieutenant and was part of the Allied occupation forces in Germany. After his return to the United States he became an officer in the National Guard of Virginia, where he remained until 1976.

He earned his doctorate at Washington and Lee University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi connection. After taking in the Bar Association Marsh began practicing as a lawyer in Strasburg. He was a trial lawyer of the town of New Market and magistrates of Strasburg. Between 1963 and 1971 he represented the seventh constituency of Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives; In 1970, he no longer stand for re- election.

Initially he worked again as a lawyer, Marsh ( Assistant Secretary of Defense) in 1973 for Under Secretary of Defense appointed; the following year he practiced for seven months from the post of adviser to President Richard Nixon for national security issues before this resigned. Even under Nixon's successor Gerald Ford was Marsh continued to work as a consultant.

From 1977 to 1981 Marsh went again to his legal profession after, before he re- entered government service as Secretary of the Army. He held this position during the entire presidency of Ronald Reagan. Then he sat down in Shenandoah County, Virginia to rest. He and his wife have three children and seven grandchildren.
