Mervyn M. Dymally

Mervyn Malcolm Dymally ( born May 12, 1926 in Cedros, Trinidad and Tobago; † 7 October 2012 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American politician. Between 1981 and 1993 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Mervyn Dymally attended until 1944 the public schools of his home. Then he studied until 1954 at the California State University in Los Angeles. Later he also studied at California State University in Sacramento and the United States International University in San Diego. Between 1979 and 1981 he was president of his company Mervyn M. Dymally Co. He also worked as a teacher. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party. From 1963 to 1966 he sat as a deputy in the California State Assembly; 1967 to 1975 he was a member of the State Senate. From 1975 to 1979 he served as Deputy Governor Deputy Governor Jerry Brown.

In the congressional elections of 1980, Dymally was the 31st electoral district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Charles H. Wilson on January 3, 1981. After five re- elections, he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1993 six legislative periods. During this time, he was from 1987 to 1989 as the successor to Mickey Leland Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. In 1992 he abandoned a bid again. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives to Dymally withdrew temporarily retired from politics. In 2002 he was again elected to the State Assembly of California. This mandate he held until 2008.
