1931 World Ice Hockey Championships
The 5th World Ice Hockey Championships and 16 Hockey Championship was held from 1 to 8 February 1931 in Krynica in Poland. Compared to the World Cup last year there was a completely different mode from. It was in this year, no Challenge Cup more, but all the teams were required from the start of the tournament on. Ten teams participated in this championship. There was first a preliminary round, with the two winners moved into the next round, while the loser had in the placement round. In the 2nd round then met the remaining eight teams in four pairings against each other. The winners reached directly to the final round, while the four losers moved into a repechage. The two winners of the repechage then also reached the finals of the top six, while the two losers fought together with the losers of the elimination round for places 7-10. Both the final round as well as the placement round were played in the league system.
Winner of this World Cup was again Canada before the U.S.. Canada won so at the fifth World Cup his fifth world title and remained at a Hockey Championships undefeated, but they had to accept their first point against Sweden with a 0-0 loss. Best European team was the team of Austria, who won the bronze medal and at the same time was able to win his second European title.
