1952 German Grand Prix

The Grand Prix of Germany in 1952 took place on 3 August at the Nurburgring and was the sixth of eight races of the Formula 1 season 1952.

Background

Although the number of British teams and drivers had not reported for the Grand Prix of Germany, the organizers were able to build on 34 entries, even more than two at Silverstone. Ferrari came back into the usual cast Ascari - to Taruffi, supplemented by four private messages - Farina. For Gordini stepped -again Jean Behraan. For Prince Bira had to vacate his seat. For the first time there was with the Maserati works team, the Felice Bonetto sent into the race, which, curiously, was driving at least in training with a tobacco pipe in his mouth. The field was Filled by numerous reports German drivers who were just normally not represented at international races. The most famous among them was Paul Pietsch in Veritas.

Training

The training offered a few surprises. Although the two Ferrari Ascari and Farina were unbeatable, but the first row of the Gordini by Trintignant and Manzon was added while Taruffi again found only in the second row. Race

At the start Ascari went away and came forward as the leader before Farina back from the first round in which seven drivers, including also had to throw in the towel Paul Pietsch. Until the penultimate round, everything seemed to develop as we were used from the previous race. Ascari took them to the field, followed by Farina and then - usually after a slow start - Taruffi. Farina came but this time not by Taruffi away, and the winner of the Switzerland GP so could pass twice Farina. However, in the penultimate round broke its axis; he was forced to drive so slowly that the Swiss Ferrari privateer Rudolf Fischer could still go by him. Ascari got on the penultimate lap also a problem and went to the pits to make up oil. This allowed Farina a lead of nine seconds on Ascari extending. But Ascari succeeded in the last round, Farina to overtake again, even out down a lead of 14 seconds on Farina and win the race. As this event took place in a single round, it was reflected in the round tables not resist, and so Ascari was officially since the third round of the Grand Prix of Belgium for almost four races without a break in the lead.
