Background

Since the entry list for the Dutch Grand Prix with 34 pilots was similar extensive as six weeks earlier in the UK, the organizers decided to carry out a pre-qualification modeled after the British Grand Prix. This should be the number of vehicles that were allowed to participate in regular exercise, be reduced beforehand. However, after Arturo Merzario that would have belonged to the circle of Vorqualifikanten could demonstrate on the basis of the rules, that this is not rule- compliant, the organizers withdrew its decision and made them all 34 riders at the training sessions on Friday and Saturday to participate.

The Renault factory team, which had skipped the Grand Prix of Germany and Austria in favor of tests for the further development of the turbo -powered car, went well again, like RAM Racing, where this weekend two local guest drivers were used, including the Formula 1 freshman Michael Bleekemolen. Riccardo Patrese returned to the Shadow factory team after disagreements between his sponsor and the team were eliminated. Thus had Merzario Arturo, who had represented his compatriot in Austria to go back with his private team at the start.

Brian Henton was invited by the Dutch team HB Bewaking alarm systems, the Boro 001 to pilot instead of his private March 761. He accepted the offer.

The March works team for the first time brought a copy of the new car of type 771 on the race track. The vehicle was driven by Ian Scheckter, while Alex Ribeiro still controlled the conventional 761B.

Training

Mario Andretti secured his fifth pole position of the season in front of Jacques Laffite and the World Cup opponents last year, Niki Lauda and James Hunt. This was followed by Carlos Reutemann next Gunnar Nilsson in the third row.

Jody Scheckter, who at this time next Lauda and Andretti had the best chance of winning the World Cup, only reached the 15th place.

Race

Hunt and Andretti reached after the start almost simultaneously the first corner called Tarzan, who was then, as now, in the form of a large hairpin. Hunt was on the inside, while Andretti had to lift so as not to reach the grassy area to the outside. Beneficiary of this duel was Laffite, the Andretti took advantage of the lack of momentum to pass him. Further back in the field damaged Watson his car on a curb and Jochen Mass collided with Alan Jones. Mass retired, Jones was able to continue.

In the third round Andretti came to Laffite past back to second place. Three laps later he had the leading Hunt sought and tried to repeat the maneuver in the first round of Tarzan. He was back on the winger, but not this time went by the gas. The two cars collided at the exit of the corner and turned Andretti, the race but Laffite Lauda and Reutemann was in fourth position to continue lying behind. Hunt drove his damaged car to the pits, where it was determined that a repair was not possible.

Until the 15th lap, Andretti dueled with Reutemann for third place. Then he dropped out due to an engine failure. In lap 20 Lauda took the lead of Laffite and defended it from now on to the finish.

By the 34th round Nilsson had caught on Reutemann. In the battle for third place, the two collided. Nilsson retired, Reutemann was able to continue the race in 14th place lying. This Patrick Tambay arrived in the customer's Ensign of the young Theodore team to a podium finish. However, lack of fuel on the penultimate lap prevented the sensation and the third place went to Jody Scheckter eventually. Emerson Fittipaldi finished in fourth place ahead of Tambay, who was still considered despite its failure due to the number of laps completed in fifth, and Reutemann, who after the collision still able to make up a total of eight courses.
