1981 CONCACAF Championship

The CONCACAF Nations Cup in 1981 was the eighth playout of the continental championship in football for North, Central America and the Caribbean was held from November 1 to 22 in Honduras instead. It was played in the Estadio Tiburcio Carias Andino exclusively in the capital Tegucigalpa. The six participants played in the past in a simple League Round FFA tournament winner.

The tournament was for the third time as a qualification for the World Cup.

Honduras hosts won his first title and qualified for the FIFA World Cup 1982 in Spain. In addition, qualified also the runner-up El Salvador as the CONCACAF received two starting place of 16 for the World Cup. El Salvador became the first Central American team that qualified for the World Cup for the second time.

Qualification

The 15 CONCACAF-M annschaften were divided into three geographical zones:

North American zone

The North American zone with three teams played with a group home and away games, the group winners and second moved into the final round.

Central American zone

The five teams played a group home and away games, the group winners and second moved into the final round.

Caribbean zone

The Caribbean zone with seven teams which were divided into two groups. The teams within groups A and B were playing with home and away matches against each other, the two group winners moved into the final round.
