1989 CONCACAF Championship

The CONCACAF Nations Cup in 1989 was the tenth playout of the continental championship in football for North, Central America and the Caribbean was held from 19 March to 19 November. As early as 1985 the competition was held without the host country, in home and away matches and was simultaneously the fifth year in a row qualifying for the World Cup.

Costa Rica and the United States qualified for the FIFA World Cup 1990 in Italy.

Qualification

Qualifying consisted of two rounds. The five top-ranked teams in the world rankings (El Salvador, Honduras, Canada, Mexico, United States ) increased only in the 2nd round. The remaining ten teams played in knockout games with back and leg. The five winners and entrants also played a knockout round.

The two games between Guatemala and El Salvador, which had been scheduled for 19 and 21 November, due to the political situation in El Salvador did not take place. Both teams could not qualify.
