1986–87 Division 1 season (Swedish ice hockey)
The 1986/87 season was the twelfth season of Division 1 as the second highest Swedish hockey league.

Mode
The league was divided into the first round in four groups of ten teams. The top two teams in each group qualified for the Allsvenskan, while the remaining eight teams had to compete in a qualifying round. According to their main round placement teams between zero and seven bonus points were given for the qualifying round. The winners of each qualifying round qualified for the playoffs. The last player of skill groups had to compete in the Relegatio to avoid relegation to Division 2.
Of the eight teams in the Allsvenskan the first place winner went straight on in the Elitserien. The runner-up qualified for the Kvalserien. The teams ranked 3-6 Allsvenskan qualified for the playoffs. The two playoff winner and the runner-up Allsvenskan and the last placed the Elitserien clashed in the Kvalserien to rise or relegation, the top two finishers were allowed to compete in the following season in the Elitserien.
For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
