1997 Super Tourenwagen Cup season

The Super Tourenwagen Cup in 1997 was the fourth season of this series.

Season overview

In the 1997 season, the Peugeot driver Laurent Aiello and the BMW driver Joachim Winkelhock fought for the title. Aiello took the early lead in the championship and defended it through the season. He achieved 11 victories and 17 podium finishes in 20 races. Angle Hock became the main opponent of Aiello, after he got off to an equally good start to the season as his teammate Johnny Cecotto. Despite four wins in a row mid-season, he could not catch up with Aiello. Despite a strong driver banns ( Emanuele Pirro, Yvan Muller, Philipp Peter and Tamara Vidali ) had the defending champion Audi to fight. Pirro won only one race, the four drivers totaled just three podium finishes.

By the end of the German Touring Car Championship (short: DTM ) or the International Touring Car Championship (short: ITC ) were the local Alfa Romeo and Opel teams and two Mercedes drivers (van Ommen and Thiim ) in the STW changed, which made for a much enlarged starting field of partly more than 30 vehicles.
