History

The 406 came in October 1995, initially as a four-door notchback sedan on the market. In October 1996, the break -called combination was introduced in April 1997 which followed, designed by Pininfarina and produced coupe.

The engine started with 1.6 liter displacement with 65 kW (88 hp). In addition, there was a 1.8-liter 81 kW (110 hp) and a 2.0 -liter petrol engine 97 kW ( 132 hp ) up to the 3.0 -liter V6 engine with an output of 140 kW (190 PS). Diesel side, there was the well-known PSA engines, first with pre-chamber, from 1999, with common- rail injection ( HDi ). Latter there was also optionally available with a particulate filter.

The petrol engines are considered very smoothly, if not always classified in the smaller versions as particularly torquey. For this, the chassis was tuned comfortable.

The standard equipment was more extensive in comparison to the German sedans. As early as 1996 included ABS and dual airbags as standard.

Facelift

In May 1999, the sedan and wagon received a major facelift. Here, in some engines the performance of rose ( for example, when 3.0-liter V6 of 140 kW/190 hp to 152 kW/207 hp ) and a new 2.2 -liter 16v petrol engine with 116 kW ( 158 hp ) came into the program. 2001 yet was followed by a gasoline direct-injection (2.0 HPi ) with 103 kW ( 140 hp).

Externally, there was the more aggressive look front on both body versions. While the Kombi the stern remained untouched, got the the sedan body-colored cross braces between the lights. The side indicators got a place in the upper part of the front fender. The revolving chrome trim strip in the bumper edge that was formerly reserved for only the models with sophisticated equipment, became standard.

The coupe was only in June 2001, a slight visual improvement through clear glass headlights. Some of the more powerful units already followed the facelift of the sedan and break, but at the same time with the facelift of the coupe still two more modern diesel engines with direct injection appeared ( a 2.0 HDi with 79 kW/107 hp and a 2.2 HDi 98 kW / 133 hp).

Even before the sedan and wagon were replaced in April 2004 by the Peugeot 407, the coupe a re facelift that turned out, however, more profound than previously received in June 2003 in the summer of 2001. Particularly striking in this respect was the large grille, which presented the future design line of Peugeot.

The 406 Coupé remained with the equipment Ultima Edizione as the latest version until May 2005 in the program.
