2008 UEFA European Under-19 Championship

The 24 U-19 European Championship took place from July 14 to 26, 2008 in the Czech Republic instead. Defending champion Spain was that Greece had defeated in the 2007 final 1-0. Germany managed in contrast to Austria and Switzerland to qualify for the finals. It won the tournament with a 3-1 over Italy and was first time since 1992 winner of a junior tournament. Scorer of the tournament was the Czech Tomáš Necid. The Germans Lars Bender and Sven Bender honored as Golden Player of the Tournament.

Mode

Besides qualify automatically as hosts Czech Republic took all 52 European associations participated in the qualification for the finals. The first qualifying round was played in 13 groups of four, with one association each group has hosted a tournament in which each team took once against each other in the group. The two highest ranked in each group and the two best third qualified for the second qualifying round ( " Elite Round "), which was played in seven groups of four according to the same mode. The group winners achieved in addition to the Czech Republic to the finals.

The final round in the Czech Republic was played in two groups of four teams each. The two group winners contested the semi-finals, the semi-final winners reached the final. In addition to the semi-final participants, qualified the two group third parties for the U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009.
