Background
After the Italian Grand Prix, Jenson Button led the Drivers' Championship with 14 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 26 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel. Brawn -Mercedes resulted in the Constructors' Championship with 40.5 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault with 84 points ahead of Ferrari.
Renault abandoned after a race again on KERS.
Before the race weekend, Renault has been sentenced to a two -year suspended sentence for the crash gates. For this reason, gave before the race 's main sponsor, ING Groep, and another sponsor, Mutua Madrileña, their commitment with immediate effect.

Training

Qualifying
In the first phase of qualifying Lewis Hamilton posted the fastest lap. The Force India drivers, Grosjean, Fisichella and Alguersuari dropped out. The second part of Nico Rosberg took the lead of the field. Trulli, Buemi, Raikkonen, Button, and Nakajima not made it into the final section. Half a minute before the end of the final qualifying section Barrichello crashed at Turn 5 and untied the termination of qualifying from. Now, since no one could improve more, the pole position went to Hamilton, who scored the fastest time ahead of Vettel and Rosberg.
Race
The launching of the pole position Hamilton started well and maintained his lead with confidence. Vettel, who started from second place came, not as good in the race and was overtaken for the first turn of Rosberg. In the first round it was on such other shifts: Barrichello improved to seventh, his team-mate Button to tenth place. In addition, there was a debatable overtaking Webber, who was behind Alonso, went past the Renault driver, said he used the run-out zone. A short time later overtook Timo Glock Alonso. However, Webber was only for a few laps in fourth place because his team had instructed him to admit the two past in order to escape a possible punishment for the overtaking maneuver against Alonso.
After three rounds, the race for Grosjean was terminated due to brake problems. Hamilton was able to continuously deposed from his pursuers at the top. Only Rosberg and Vettel remained with Hamilton within ten seconds. However, all the cards were in Hamilton, from the leading trio had the most fuel on board. In the back part of the field a closely spaced group was formed, as freshman Alguersuari stopped the driver behind it. However, it managed to Adrian Sutil, who was directly behind the Spaniard, for the time being not down past him. In the meantime, there were a few rounds in a section of the yellow flag because Glock had lost a part of his racing car. However, the German was able to continue without any problems. The part was removed after a few rounds of a marshal.
From the leading trio Vettel went first to the box and came back behind Barrichello on track. One lap later also graduated Rosberg his pit stop. He came before Barrichello back on the track, but the Brazilian was able to quickly go past him. After also Glock and Barrichello had been in the pits of the pilot at the top, the leader Hamilton pitted and its leadership ahead of Alonso, who had not yet stopped defending. In the meantime, the race stewards had become aware of the pit-lane exit from Rosberg: The German drove unintentionally over the white line and was therefore penalized with a drive-through penalty.
In the back of the pack Sutil ventured on the Esplanade Drive overtaking against Alguersuari. The maneuver was not successful and Sutil turned then. When trying to down back onto the track, he collided with Nick Heidfeld started from the pit lane, for whom the race was over on the spot. Heidfeld came so for the first time since the U.S. Grand Prix in 2007 is no longer in the standings. While Sutil could go on for a few laps, but had to give up a little later in the pits. After the race, Sutil was due to dangerous driving subject to a fine of $ 20,000.
Because of the accident and the wreckage on the track, the safety car was sent out on the track. In the pits there was intense activity, as all drivers who were not yet on the box, its stop completed. Alguersuari started up at the stop - as Felipe Massa in the previous year - zufrüh going on and took the tank with hose. After the mechanic had the tube removed, he took the race on again. Behind the safety car led the field in front of Hamilton Rosberg, Vettel, Glock, Alonso, Barrichello, Kovalainen, Button and Webber. Particularly tragic was the safety car phase for Rosberg, who had not yet completed his drive-through penalty. Two laps after the restart, the German took his punishment and came in 14th place back on the track. At the top of Vettel Hamilton could put pressure to overtake him he did not succeed.
In the 39th round Vettel completed his final pit stop and came in seventh place back on the track. However, Vettel was too fast in the pit lane and was then punished with a drive-through penalty, which zunichtemachte the way to a final race win. Hamilton and Glock now lying in second place was longer than Vettel to stay outside, but also had to Glock ahead of Hamilton in the pits.
In the 46th round Webber flew in from Sheares curve with brake problems. Although the safety car was not needed, Hamilton completed immediately his last pit stop and came in second behind Alonso back on track. Also Barrichello had in the box. However, his stop was not perfect, because he ran out of the engine when starting. So he lost his teammate Button vital seconds. After 47 rounds, both Toro Rosso drivers gave at the same time on the box.
After all drivers had completed their pit stops, Hamilton led the field in front of Glock, Alonso, Vettel, Button, Barrichello and Kovalainen. Button tried to reduce the gap to Vettel, it was, however, a few laps to conserve his brakes and retract important points for the championship title. Robert Kubica, who was number eight, was indeed set by Nakajima under pressure, but could his position until the end of the race against the Japanese, who did not attack him defend.
Without further changes Lewis Hamilton won his second race in Singapore in the 2009 season. Alonso posted the fastest lap of the race.
In the world championship Button was able to extend his lead over Barrichello to 15 points, his lead over Vettel dropped to 25 points. Webber has no chance to win the world title since this race. With the medal system proposed by Bernie Ecclestone before the season, Button would have won the world title in Singapore.
