Background

After the Italian Grand Prix, Jenson Button led the Drivers' Championship with 14 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 26 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel. Brawn -Mercedes resulted in the Constructors' Championship with 40.5 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault with 84 points ahead of Ferrari.

Race

Only Rosberg and Vettel remained with Hamilton within ten seconds. However, all the cards were in Hamilton, from the leading trio had the most fuel on board. In the back part of the field a closely spaced group was formed, as freshman Alguersuari stopped the driver behind it. However, it managed to Adrian Sutil, who was directly behind the Spaniard, for the time being not down past him. In the meantime, there were a few rounds in a section of the yellow flag because Glock had lost a part of his racing car. However, the German was able to continue without any problems. From the leading trio Vettel went first to the box and came back behind Barrichello on track. One lap later also graduated Rosberg his pit stop. He came before Barrichello back on the track, but the Brazilian was able to quickly go past him. After also Glock and Barrichello had been in the pits of the pilot at the top, the leader Hamilton pitted and its leadership ahead of Alonso, who had not yet stopped defending. In the meantime, the race stewards had become aware of the pit-lane exit from Rosberg: The German drove unintentionally over the white line and was therefore penalized with a drive-through penalty.

In the back of the pack Sutil ventured on the Esplanade Drive overtaking against Alguersuari. The maneuver was not successful and Sutil turned then. When trying to down back onto the track, he collided with Nick Heidfeld started from the pit lane, for whom the race was over on the spot. Heidfeld came so for the first time since the U.S. Grand Prix in 2007 is no longer in the standings. While Sutil could go on for a few laps, but had to give up a little later in the pits. In the 39th round Vettel completed his final pit stop and came in seventh place back on the track. However, Vettel was too fast in the pit lane and was then punished with a drive-through penalty, which zunichtemachte the way to a final race win. Hamilton and Glock now lying in second place was longer than Vettel to stay outside, but also had to Glock ahead of Hamilton in the pits.

In the 46th round Webber flew in from Sheares curve with brake problems. Although the safety car was not needed, Hamilton completed immediately his last pit stop and came in second behind Alonso back on track. Also Barrichello had in the box. However, his stop was not perfect, because he ran out of the engine when starting. So he lost his teammate Button vital seconds. After 47 rounds, both Toro Rosso drivers gave at the same time on the box.

After all drivers had completed their pit stops, Hamilton led the field in front of Glock, Alonso, Vettel, Button, Barrichello and Kovalainen. Button tried to reduce the gap to Vettel, it was, however, a few laps to conserve his brakes and retract important points for the championship title. In the world championship Button was able to extend his lead over Barrichello to 15 points, his lead over Vettel dropped to 25 points. Webber has no chance to win the world title since this race.
