Administrative divisions of Peru

The Republic of Peru is a structured into 24 departments decentralized unitary state according to its constitution. The departments are in 195 provinces (Spanish: provincias, singular Provincia ) and these in turn in 1,828 districts (Spanish distritos, Sg Distrito) divided. The town of Callao has a special status as Provincia Constitucional heard, but just like the city to Lima Departamento Lima.

History

As in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru, the Republic of Peru, was changed to the Spanish intendances Peru in 1821 in seven departments around. After this conversion, there were the following departments: Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Junín, La Libertad, Lima and Puno. This Departementos were in turn divided into 56 provinces and 439 districts.

In the decades that followed were more and more departments until in 1980 Ucayali was forming itself as the last ( twenty-fourth ) Departamento from the existing Loreto.

In 1988, 24 departments were combined into twelve regions by order of the government of Alan García Pérez. With this step, the somewhat hasty "regionalization" of Peru began. Under Alberto Fujimori, the centralism for its authoritarian government took advantage of the process of regionalization was stopped and 1992 divided the regions back into 24 departments. With the Organic Law de Regionalización of 16 November 2002, the self-government of the 24 departments and the " Provincia del Callao Constitucional " has been introduced. Judiciary
