Regional level

At the top level Québec is divided into 17 administrative regions (French régions administrative ). Regional communities

Municipalites Clarisse de comté

The administrative regions in turn are made up of regional county municipalities (French municipalites Clarisse de comté, MRC) which perform some transregional management tasks. These include waste management, preparation of the land use plan, coordination of public transport and the water supply.

Territoires Equivalents

Some communities are not the same part of a regional community. This applies to 47 First Nations communities in Indian reservations, six communities in the Southern Administrative Region of Côte -Nord and all municipalities in the administrative region of Nord- du- Québec. The parish of Notre- Dame-des- Anges is an enclave in the city of Québec. Finally, there are 14 municipalities or agglomerations, perform the duties of the regional community itself.

The areas that are not part of a regional community are treated for statistical purposes, either as part of a regional municipality or in a " territorial equivalent of a regional community " (French territoires Equivalents à une MRC) combined. Thus, the entire territory of Quebec is divided into regional municipalities or equivalents.

Metropolitan associations

In the metropolitan areas of Quebec and Montreal there is an additional level of the Metropolitan Association (French communauté métropolitaine, CM). The metropolitan associations have the responsibility for planning, regional and international economic development of their area, on public transport in the metropolitan area as well as the cultural policy.

Agglomerations

As a result of the cancellation of incorporations in 2006, there are eleven urban areas who perceive some urban skills for multiple cities. The following table indicates the types of agglomerates and the communities of which they are composed. Is agglomeration in red, it means that it simultaneously performs the function of an MRC.
