Alex Delvecchio

Alexander Peter Delvecchio ( born December 4, 1931 in Fort William, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player and coach of Italian descent, who played from 1950 to 1974 for the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League.

Career

Alex Delvecchio first learned to walk at age twelve ice, but already in 1951 at age 20 he joined the NHL's Detroit Red Wings at, after playing a year in the OHA for the Oshawa Generals. In his first season he was able to win the Stanley Cup with the same team.

" Fats", as he was called because of its round face, played in Detroit on the position of the center and the left winger for 22 complete seasons and parts of two more seasons. Among the players with whom he played in a line, were Ted Lindsay and Gordie Howe. He was regarded as gentlemen in the sport of ice hockey and won the Lady Byng Memorial three times Trophy, which is awarded to players who combine fairness and playful class. There were two appeals to the NHL Second All-Star Team; once as a left winger and even as a center, which he was only the third player after Sid Abel and Dit Clapper, who received all-star honors in two different positions.

From December 1956 to November 1964 he set a team record with 548 consecutive games disputed. Throughout his career, he was missing a total of only 43 games, 22 of those in the season 1956 / 57th In 1962 he was appointed captain of the Red Wings and retained the office for twelve years. Longer in the history of Red Wings was only captain Steve Yzerman.

1973 ended Alex Delvecchio his career, and was only the second player in the history of the league, who played 20 years for a single team. For his contributions to the sport of ice hockey in the United States and the NHL, he received the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1974. Shortly after he had taken leave from hockey, he took over the post of coach of the Red Wings, which he held for two years before he worked as general manager of the team until 1977. In the same year he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

1991 suspended the Detroit Red Wings to Delvecchio 's honor a banner with his number 10 on the hall ceiling at Joe Louis Arena. The number is assigned to no more players.
