Sid Abel

Gerald Sidney " Sid " Abel ( born February 18, 1918 in Melville, Saskatchewan; † 7 February 2000) was a Canadian ice hockey player ( Center / Left Wing ), coach and general manager, and the 1939 to 1954 for the Detroit Red Wings the Chicago Blackhawks played in the National Hockey League.

Career

As a junior he played in 1936 with the Saskatoon Wesleys to the Memorial Cup, and later with the Flin Flon Bombers to the Allan Cup, but could not win any of these trophies.

In the season 1938/39, he made his debut with the Detroit Red Wings, but took some years until he was able to win in the NHL. His first Stanley Cup he won in the 1942/43 season. At that time he played with Don Grosso and Eddie Wares in the liniment Line. The years between 1943 and 1945 he spent in the army and thus lacked his team. At the end of the season 1945/46, he still played seven games and could intervene in the following season back into full action. Now Abel was, by now 29 years old, the young Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay and then 19, then 22, placed on the page. Together as " Production Line " they were then the strongest storm of the NHL series and managed in the 1949/50 season, the first three places of the scorers list. As captain of the Red Wings, he won in 1950 and 1952, once again the Stanley Cup. By 34, he got an offer from Chicago to operate there as player-coach and the Red Wings gave him free. After two years with the Blackhawks, he ended his active career.

In 1957 he returned as coach back to Detroit in 1962 and took over the job of General Manager. In 1971 he took over the St. Louis Blues for 10 games and a few years later he coached 3 games long, the Kansas City Scouts.

Sid Abel was honored in 1969 with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

His 1977 born grandson Brent Johnson goalie in the NHL.
