Pittsburgh Hornets

The Pittsburgh Hornets were an American ice hockey franchise in the American Hockey League from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The venues for the Hornets were the Duquesne Gardens and the Pittsburgh Civic Arena.

History

As the International Hockey League and the Canadian - American Hockey League in 1936 merged with the International - American Hockey League, was the two-time winner of the playoff IHL, the Detroit Olympics, to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, relocated and renamed the Pittsburgh Hornets. As a cooperation partner and the Detroit Red Wings chose the Hornets out of the National Hockey League, who already worked with the Olympics in their IHL time. In the 1939/40 season, the franchise reached for the first time in its history, the finals for the Calder Cup, but lost the Providence Reds in a sweep in the best- of-five series. In 1945, the franchise has been a farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL, having previously worked for 18 years with the Detroit Red Wings. After two final defeats in the 1946/47 season against the Hershey Bears and 1950/51 against the Cleveland Barons, the Pittsburgh Hornets won the Calder Cup in season 1951/52, for the first time. In the final Pittsburgh won 4-2 victories against the Providence Reds and was therefore unable to avenge their defeat in their first finals. In the following season the Hornets, who had reached the playoff finals in a row for the third time failed again to the Cleveland Barons.

After a first-round from in the season 1953/54, the team's Calder Cup a year later won for the second time. Due to the demolition of the old Duquesne Gardens in 1956, Pittsburgh had to temporarily suspend the operation of gambling. Then the leaders moved the franchise to Rochester, New York, where, under the name Rochester Americans has since been active in the AHL.

After completion of the Pittsburgh Civic Arena in 1961 the Pittsburgh Hornets of the AHL received permission to continue the franchise after five -year break. First, the Hornets managed not to build on the past successes and missed the first two seasons after the resumption of play in each operation the playoffs. There followed three years in which excreting Hornets respectively in the first round, before the finals reached in the season 1966/67, where they calculated the Rochester Americans beat in a sweep in the best- of-seven series and its third and final Calder Cup win. After the season the franchise was disbanded, as with the Pittsburgh Penguins, a franchise of the National Hockey League was founded in the city for the first time.
