Buffalo Bisons (AHL)

The Buffalo Bisons were an American Hockey franchise in the American Hockey League from Buffalo, New York. The venue of the bison was the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium.

History

After the 1939/40 season, the Syracuse Stars were bought by businessman Louis M. Jacobs and to Buffalo, New York, relocated, where they played as Buffalo Bisons in the American Hockey League from season 1940/41. After the bison in their first two AHL seasons each missed the playoffs, they won in 1943 and 1944 respectively the prestigious Calder Cup. After Erstrundenaus 1945 succeeded in Buffalo in 1946 for the third time in the franchise history of the Calder Cup win, as they almost prevailed 4-3 victories against the Cleveland Barons. After this success, it took until 1963 until the Buffalo Bisons were the Calder Cup win again. Before that failed in 1948, 1955, 1959 and 1962 respectively in the finals.

In the season 1969/70, the Bisons won the Calder Cup for the fifth and final time with a sweep in the best- of-seven series against the Springfield Kings. After the play time of the game was shut down after 30 years as a team from Buffalo was inducted into the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres for the 1970/71 season for the first time. With five wins and four final defeats the Buffalo Bisons of the most successful franchises were in AHL history.
