Roy Worters

Roy " Shrimp " Worters (* October 19, 1900 in Toronto, Ontario, † November 7, 1957 ) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played from 1925 to 1937 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Montreal Canadiens and New York Americans in the National Hockey League.

Career

During his youth, he played with Lionel Conacher at the Toronto Canoe Club Paddlers and took the team to the Memorial Cup in 1920. Due to its size of only 1.60 meters, he was nicknamed Shrimp.

In 1923 he moved to the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets in the Usaha. Here he was the best goalkeeper in the league and quickly became a crowd favorite. As the NHL season brought to 1925/26, with the Pirates an NHL team to Pittsburgh, got you a number of players Yellowjackets into the team.

The defense of the Pirates was the weak point of the team, but Worters kept his team with good performances in the race. In the first three years he had not been in only one game in goal for the Pirates and was represented by his coach Odie Cleghorn. For the 1928/29 season he was with the Pirates can not agree on a contract and switched to the New York Americans.

The Americans were in the previous season still the weakest team in the league, but with a Gegentorschnitt of 1.15 he brought the team into the playoffs. He was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as most valuable player for this outstanding achievement. At the end of the following season, he helped the Montreal Canadiens from in a game to replace the injured George Hainsworth. With just 74 goals conceded he was the most successful goalkeeper in the 1930/31 season. He stayed for 324:40 minutes in four consecutive games without conceding a goal. Even if the Americans had little success as a team, they were occupied with Worters always excellent in goal. After the 1936/37 season, he finished his career.

He died in 1957 of throat cancer. In 1969 he was honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
