Career

When he moved from the junior to the senior level, played only six teams in the NHL. In general, there was a goalkeeper, who played almost all the games. So the chance of a jump to the NHL was low. After two years with the New York Rovers and the Long Iceland Ducks EHL he joined the WHL with the Vancouver Canucks. In the season 1963/64 he played in the AHL with the Baltimore Clippers. Here he got the opportunity the injured Jacques Plante in five games to be represented at the New York Rangers. In 1964 he returned to Vancouver. In 1966 he again played for the Baltimore Clippers. In the 1967/68 season was free at Rangers the place of the second goalkeeper after Cesare Maniago had left the team in the NHL Expansion Draft 1967. He got four bets as a replacement for Ed Giacomin. Often he also played in the AHL with the Buffalo Bisons.

The breakthrough in the NHL he succeeded in the 1970/71 season, when the Rangers surrounded on a system with two goalkeepers. Now he shared the games with Giacomin. In the first year they won the Vezina Trophy that. Three times in a row, he played at the NHL All-Star Game. In the season 1974/75 he had first denied more than half of the games.

The following year he moved to Chicago Blackhawks. Here stood with Tony Esposito of the best goalkeepers in the goal this time. After 15 games in his first season followed only six in the following. At 37, he finished his career in the summer of 1977.
