Alexei Ulanov

Alexei Nikolaevich Ulanov (Russian Алексей Николаевич Уланов; * November 4, 1947 in Moscow ) is a Russian former figure skater, who started in pair skating for the Soviet Union.

Ulanov began as a child with his sister Jelena with figure skating. He first started out as a single runner and was at least tenth at the Soviet Championships. He then transferred to pair skating and started first with his sister.

In 1968 Irina Rodnina was his figure skating partner. They started for the CSKA Moscow and trained at Stanislaw Shuk. With Rodnina he was in 1968 with their first Soviet Championship third behind Lyudmila Belousova and Oleg Protopopov and Tamara Moskvina and Alexei Mishin. 1968 disputed Ulanow and Rodnina as the European Championships in Västerås, Sweden also their first major international tournament. With the double victory of their countrymen, they finished it in fifth place. 1969 occupied Ulanow and Rodnina again only the third place at the national championships were in Garmisch -Partenkirchen, but European champion and in Colorado Springs at their first world championship is also world champion, the latter with a unanimous judges' verdict in front of their two Soviet competitors Moskvina / Mishin and Belousova / Protopopov.

In 1970 the couple was the first time Soviet champion and defended in Leningrad the European Championship title in Ljubljana and the world championship title. They defeated their strongest competitors from now on Liudmila Smirnova and Andrei Suraikin. 1971 resulted in the National Championship, the European Championship in Zurich and the World Cup in Lyon the same results. However, Ulanov and Rodnina lost Kürwertung in against their national rivals WM. 1972 dominated Ulanow and Rodnina again. They were European champions in Gothenburg for the fourth time in a row. In her first Olympics, they won with victories in the short program as well as freestyle gold medal in Sapporo ahead of their eternal rival Smirnova and Suraikin. However, this success had a history. Alexei Ulanov she was satisfied that Rodnina was viewed as a stronger part of the pair and fell in love with the arch rival of the couple, Lyudmila Smirnova. Even before the Olympics, the separation of the couple was a done deal for next season. After the Olympic freestyle Rodnina left the ice in tears. The World Cup in Calgary was the last joint appearance of the skating pair Ulanow / Rodnina. With a unanimous judges' verdict, they were for the fourth time in a row world champion.

Alexei Ulanov married Lyudmila Smirnova. These private and sporting changes also led to tensions with the coach, Stanislav Zhuk. So Alexei Ulanov has already appeared from 1973 along with Lyudmila Smirnova as a figure skating pair to. They started for Spartak Leningrad and trained at Maja Belenkaya. At the European Championships in Cologne and the World Championships in Bratislava Ulanov and Smirnova won the silver medal, both times behind Rodnina and her new partner Alexander Zaitsev. At the European Championships 1974 in Zagreb, it was only enough for the bronze medal behind their countrymen and Romy Kermer and Rolf Oesterreich from the GDR. Ulanow studied at the Russian State Pedagogical University in the heart of Leningrad. He ran his amateur career in ice revues and was figure skating coach.
