Andrew Archibald Macdonald

Andrew Archibald Macdonald ( born February 14, 1829 in Three Rivers, Prince Edward Iceland, † March 21, 1912 in Charlottetown ) was a Canadian politician. As one of the Fathers of Confederation, he is among the pioneers of the Canadian federal government established in 1867. From 1884 to 1889 he served as Lieutenant Governor, after he was until his death in Canadian Senator.

Biography

Macdonald, whose ancestors had immigrated from Scotland, received his education in part by a private tutor. He took over the family-owned trading company, which expanded greatly under his leadership. Through its business activities, he soon acquired an influence in politics. From 1853 to 1858, and from 1863 was Macdonald member of parliament of the former colony of Prince Edward Iceland. In September 1864 he was one of six representatives of the colony at the Charlottetown Conference, a month later, he took part in the Quebec conference.

1873 Macdonald moved temporarily retired from politics. Governor General Lord Lansdowne Macdonald sworn in on 1 August 1884 as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Iceland. This representative office he held until 2 September 1889. Two years later the appointment was followed by a senator. In Federal Parliament he was regarded as Liberal -Conservative. At the age of 83 years he died in office.

His younger brother Augustine Colin Macdonald was also later lieutenant governor.
