Ansiao is a small town ( Vila ) in Portugal with 2757 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). Ansiao located between Lisbon and Porto.

History

History of the circle

Antas and other finds indicate a prehistoric settlement since at least the Neolithic period. From the Castro culture remains of fortified settlements have been found. The ruling from the 2nd century here Romans also left behind a large number traces, as pottery, coins and mosaics. The Roman road from Sellium (today Tomar ) proceeded according Conimbriga here. The Suevi conquered in the 5th century, the area that was part of the Western Goth in the 6th century. From 711 the Moors invaded the Iberian Peninsula and settled here.

The present town was first officially mentioned in 1175, guesses about 1142 for the first time awarded city rights have not been proven so far. 1514 brought King D.Manuel I. the place to Vila ( town with administrative rights ) and gave him his first occupied a city.

During the Napoleonic invasions Ansiao suffered early 19th century heavy destruction.

Origin of the name

The place was already noted in the first documented mention of 1175 as Ansiom. The name probably derives from a Germanic personal names a landowner and the local ruler, when the area was only occupied by the Suevi and the Visigoths.

However, a circulating Legend has it that the later canonized Queen Santa Isabel (1271-1336) ( Ancião ) gave alms on the journey through the land here an old man needy. From the city's name is derived.
