Geography

Penela is located about 20 km south of the district capital of Coimbra.

History

The Romans had a fortress that was destroyed by the Vandals. The newly erected here in connection fortress was conquered in the 8th century by the Arabs. These were displaced as a result of the Reconquista of Ferdinand I., and D.Sisnando was as Count of Coimbra ruler of Penela. Before the founding of the independent Kingdom of Portugal Penela received its first city rights ( Foral ) in 1137, of D.Afonso Henriques. After re- invasion of the Arabs Penela was finally recaptured in 1148.

In the Portuguese revolution of 1383 the inhabitants Penelas fought on the side of the supporters of John I, against the will of the ruler of the city. In 1514, King Manuel I. renewed the city rights.
