Ashanti Region
The Ashanti Region ( in Akan: Asante Mantaw ) is a region of Ghana with its capital Kumasi.
Geography
The region is located in the center of the country, bordered to the north and northwest of the Brong- Ahafo Region, to the south by the Central Region, on the southwest by the Western Region and on the east by the Eastern Region.
Population
The vast majority of the population consists of members of the Akan people of the Ashanti. The Ashanti make up about 19 % of the population. The next largest groups are the ethnic groups of nordghanaischen Mole Dagbane - linguistic group with 16.5 % and the Ewe of south-west Ghana with 13%. Furthermore, the Ga - Adangme and finally Guan 4%. The proportion of non-Africans in the population is below 2%.
More than half the population lives in urban areas, alone in Kumasi about one-third of the total population.
Traditional structures
In addition to state government structures (regional ministers and chiefs of districts ), there is a distinct and recognized traditional parallel structure in the form of 36 traditional " councils " (Traditional Councils ), in each of which a traditional leader ( Paramount Chief ) as Chairman. These councils are part of the administration and members of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs. President of this " upper house " is the respective Asantehene, ie the influential traditional chief of the Ashanti.
