Ballon d'Or (1956–2009)

The Ballon d'Or (French for Golden Ball ) was a 1956-2009 year by the French Football journal France Football award prize to the best football player of the calendar year. Originally intended only for European players from European clubs, the award was also known under the name European Footballer of the Year. History

The price Ballon d'Or goes back to the France football chief editor Gabriel Hanot of his European colleagues asked in 1956 to select a Player of the Year. The first winner was in 1956 the Englishman Stanley Matthews of Blackpool FC, he is 41 years and the oldest winners.

Originally, the journalists were allowed to choose only European players who also played in European clubs. As of 1995, were all football players who played for a European club to be chosen. In the same year, the Liberians George Weah became the first non-Europeans. Then came to the last award of the prize 2009, most winners ( 5) from Brazil. As of 2007, all football players could be chosen regardless of nationality and of the league in which they play. And there were also chosen then only players from European clubs.

The most successful players are the Dutchman Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten and Frenchman Michel Platini, each of which was three times awarded the Ballon d'Or. Platini was honored as the only player three times in a row. Four other players have ever won twice, including the German Franz Beckenbauer and Karl -Heinz Rummenigge. The nationalities of the players German and Dutch lead with seven titles. The most successful clubs are FC Barcelona and Juventus, who presented the award winners nine times. Juventus put the winners as the only club four times in succession (1982-1985).

Thrice managed players from the same association in the top three: 1972 (Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, and Günter Netzer ) and 1981 (Karl -Heinz Rummenigge, Paul Breitner and Bernd Schuster ) each from Germany, and in 1988 the Dutchman Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard. The latter also all played at AC Milan, where it 1989 again managed to occupy with Marco van Basten, Franco Baresi and Frank Rijkaard, the first three places.

As the only goalkeeper Lev Yashin in 1963 was awarded the Ballon d'Or. Lionel Messi became the first Argentine who could win the prize. Messi received for the year 2009 473 of a possible 480 points and the maximum score was thus as close as no other player before.

Twelve times the Balloon d'Or winner was also voted World Player of the Year.

Assignment mode

The prize was awarded by a jury each with a sports journalists from the countries of the 53 UEFA member associations as well as 53 judges from the countries of those non-European organizations that have participated in at least one World Cup finals. Each of them awarded to five players from a given by the France- Football - editors list five, four, three, two and one point.
