Banyalbufar

Banyalbufar is a municipality of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca. The village of the same name is the administrative center of the municipality.

Statistical data

The municipality has an area of 18.1 Banyalbufar km ² with 583 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). This corresponds to a population density of 32 persons per km ². In 2006, the proportion of foreigners was 8.9 % ( 51), the proportion of German population 1.7% (10).

In 1991, 85.7 % of the population Mallorcan, 8.3% came from other Spanish provinces, and only 6 % were foreigners. The highest population was recorded in 1920 with 894 residents. In the following ten years, the population fell off dramatically, probably due to political unrest in the city. 1930 Banyalbufar had only 200 inhabitants.

In 1991 there were in the church Banyalbufar six illiterate. The majority of the population has either no education (111 inhabitants), elementary education (99 inhabitants), the high school (86 people) and 47 people in this community have graduated from high school.

Geography

On the Ma-10 can be reached by road between Andratx and Valldemossa to a serpentine route the village Banyalbufar. It is located on one of the slopes of the Tramuntana mountain range.

The town's original name Banyalbahar consists of two clearly differentiated parts: banya and bahar. Climate

History

After the Catalan conquest of Mallorca ( Mayurka ) 1229 Banyalbufar was under the nobles Gilabert de Cruïlles and Ramon Sa Clusa.

During the Middle Ages the valley was to the 15th century from a virtually absolutist government dominated: the Barony of Banyalbufar. The ruler of the barony had the civil and criminal jurisdiction over the entire local population.

The inhabitants of Banyalbufar devoted himself almost exclusively to agriculture. The fish played only a secondary importance. They grew wheat, barley, legumes, olives, flax, hemp, saffron and especially wine. The local sweet malvasia was highly appreciated. After their cultivation has long been neglected, efforts are today, they re- planting.
