Blaine is a city ( town) in the U.S. state of Maine in Aroostook County.
Geography and transport
The city is located in eastern Aroostook County near the Canadian border. It is the southern part of the twin city of Mars Hill - Blaine. Through the city leads the U.S. Highway 1, which continues north towards Fort Fairfield and Presque Isle and south towards Houlton. Blaine himself had no rail connection, but in the neighboring town of Mars Hill was a passenger station. The leading past here railway Brownsville -Saint -Leonard, however, is shut down. The nearest airport with scheduled flights is located in Presque Isle.
History
Initially the settlement was named Alva. She was appointed on February 10, 1874 to the city and named at the same time after the later Senator and presidential candidate James Blaine.
