Eagle Lake is a town in Aroostook County in the U.S. state of Maine.

Geography

Eagle Lake is located at 47 ° 2'24 " north latitude and 68 ° 35'22 " directly on the same lake. Bangor is 220 km away to the south. The border with the Canadian province of New Brunswick is located at a distance of 25 kilometers to the north.

History

When in 1839 were staying military units in the area as part of the Aroostook War, they noticed a large number of bald eagles ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus) (English Bald Eagle ) and named the place and the lake therefore " Eagle Lake ". Shortly afterwards settled there the first settlers down, who established a plantation and worked in forestry. 1870, the first sawmill was put into operation, the others followed. 1879 three such facilities and also a flour mill were already built. In 1905 began the construction of the Northern Maine General Hospital., 1908 it was connected to the telephone network.

Today, Eagle Lake due to the largely untouched nature with nearby forests and water areas and a remarkable wild animal population (including deer and elk ) is a popular destination for naturalists, birdwatchers and hikers, but also for anglers and hunters.
