Ashland ( Ashland Township also ) is a city ( town) in the U.S. state of Maine in Aroostook County.
Geography
The city is located in the center of the Aroostook County on Aroostook River. The town also includes the north of the center, the settlement Sheridan.
Traffic
Through the city leads the Maine State Route 11, which runs north to Portage and south towards Patten. Ashland is also the starting point of the Maine State Route 163 and the Maine State Route 227, both of which lead to Presque Isle. The Route 163 proceeds via Mapleton, route 227 on Castle Hill.
Due to the city is the railway line Oakfield -Fort Kent, but for sale or closure is pending and will be used only irregularly by the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway freight traffic. The former passenger station of the city was located west of the center at the Station Street and was operated from 1896 to 1954. In the settlement Sheridan was a stopping point on the railway line.
The nearest airport with scheduled flights is located in Presque Isle.
History
The area was settled in 1837 and later to the hometown of Ashland ( Kentucky) of the politician Henry Clay named. On February 18, 1862, the settlement was declared a city.
Culture and Education
Ashland has a library and a lumberjack Museum. The education is provided by the Ashland Community High School.
Industry and economy
To the west of the city is a biomass power plant of Boralex Group, which, like a paper mill uses the space in Ashland abundant wood resources.
