Caribou is a city in the U.S. state of Maine in Aroostook County.

Geography

Caribou is located in the center of the village in northern Maine Aroostook County, close to the border with Canada. The area is mainly accessible by two roads: the U.S. Interstate 95 from the south and the Trans-Canada Highway from the north. The nearest airport is in Presque Isle.

History

To 1824 settlers from New Brunswick on the north side of the river Aroostook settled. The City of Caribou was established in 1842 under the name of Lyndon, community status was awarded in 1859. The first school was built in 1852 and renamed to its current name took place in 1877.

Economy

The main industry in Caribou and throughout Aroostook County is agriculture. Crops are especially potatoes and broccoli (the largest growing area of ​​the east coast). Other important agricultural products are peas, oats and hay.
