Allagash is a town ( Town) in the U.S. state of Maine in Aroostook County. It is measured in terms of land area, the largest city in Maine, but with only 239 inhabitants ( 2010 census ) one of the least populated.

Geography and transport

The city is located in the north of Aroostook County at the mouth of the Allagash River in the Saint John River. It is the terminus of Maine State Route 161, which leads from here to Saint Francis, Fort Kent, Caribou and Fort Fairfield. In the 1910s, an extension of the railway Van Buren -Saint Francis was planned, which was never built, so the city remained without a railway connection. The nearest airport with scheduled flights is located in Presque Isle.

History

1838 settled at the mouth down the first settlers. On September 28, 1885 Allagash was declared a city.
