BTR-60

Soviet armored personnel carriers BTR -60

The BTR -60 was a Soviet armored personnel carriers. BTR is an abbreviation for Bronjetransportjor (Russian Бронетранспортёр to German armored transporter). The vehicle belonged to equip the NVA and was guided there as SPW -60 ( armored personnel carriers ).

He was the first of a series of four-axle armored personnel carriers that were developed for the Soviet land forces and the armies of the Warsaw Pact. The armor was rather light and consisted of welded steel plates.

The BTR -60 had two separate gasoline engine in the rear, which drives two axles. His 8 × 8 drive made him quite terrain (in the context of a wheeled armored vehicle ). The front of the vehicle was beveled to dismiss impacting projectiles, but also favored the floating characteristics of the fully amphibious BTR.

The BTR -60, however, had a number of weaknesses:

  • The wheels were prone to punctures
  • The armor was only limited protection against fire and shrapnel Protect
  • The crew compartment could only be terminated by the skylights, which exposed the soldiers from enemy fire

Successor models such as the BTR- 70 resolved to a certain extent these disadvantages ( with the exception of fuel consumption ).
