Caravaca de la Cruz is a city in southeastern Spain in the autonomous region of Murcia

Geography

Caravaca de la Cruz is located about 80 km from Murcia, the capital of the eponymous province in the valley of the River Argos in the Betic Cordillera.

History

Attractions

Caravaca is known as the Holy City of the Catholic Church. She is honored by the privilege of every seven years to celebrate a Holy Year. At the last Holy Year, 2010, about a million pilgrims came to Caravaca. Worship is the so-called Cross of Caravaca, which is preserved in the Basilica over the city, which also dominates the cityscape.

There are also in the lovely old town numerous churches and a kind of temple ( Templete ). 2 km away is the Fuentes de Marqués, several sources in a delightful setting.

In La Encarnación, a few kilometers from Caravaca, there is a whole complex of important archeological sites, including temples, a Roman quarry, Arab radicals and a cave with remains of Neanderthals.

From 1 to 5 May, the local festival is celebrated with processions and folklore.
