History

Construction and commissioning

The Carnival Elation was the seventh and penultimate cruise ship "Fantasy" class with the hull number 491 at the Finnish Kvaerner Masa Yards AB (now STX Finland Cruise Oy) during 1997 in Helsinki on Kiel. In mid-March 1998, she was handed over to the shipping company. The naming ceremony took place Shari Arison, the daughter of the shipping company founder Ted Arison.

Use

On 20 March 1998, the Elation ran out for their first cruise. She was the first ship of the company, which was located on the West Coast and ended in Los Angeles cruises along the Mexican coast. After the Carnival Elation was stationed in San Diego, it is from May 2010 from the home port of Mobile ( Alabama) calling destinations in the Caribbean. As part of the "Evolution of Fun" program, the Carnival Elation was extensively modernized in 2009.

Incidents

  • End of October 2002 had to be canceled a cruise because of problems with the drive system. The ship was put into dry dock in the short term.
  • During a Caribbean cruise in June 2005, the ship drifted after a failure of the machinery about an hour to maneuver at sea.

Machinery and drive

Energy supply

The Carnival Elation is equipped with a diesel-electric machinery which supplies the entire ship with electrical energy. In contrast to the previously built ships of the " Fantasy " class six identical 12 - cylinder diesel engines of the type Wärtsilä 12V38 are installed in the two spatially separate engine rooms. They drive synchronous generators which feed an electric power output of 11,000 kVA in the high-voltage onboard power supply (3 -phase alternating current, 6.6 kV, 60 Hz).

Drive

The Carnival Elation was the first cruise ship in the world that has been equipped with propeller gondolas instead of a conventional drive with shaft, propeller and rudder. Previously this system had come almost exclusively in specialized vessels such as tugs and similar water vehicles.

The drive of the Carnival Elation was developed by ABB Marine and shipyard Kvaerner Masa Yards AB. The system consists of two built- in rear, 360 ° rotating propeller gondolas of the type ABB " Azipod ". In each gondola is a 3- phase synchronous motor, which transmits power of 14 MW (about 19,040 hp) directly to a 4-blade fixed propeller in the direction facing the front ( tractor propeller ).

In addition to a very smooth ride and a low level of vibration on board this type of drive also caused a higher efficiency and significantly improved maneuverability. So could the turning circle at full speed to be reduced by approximately 30 % in comparison with the other ships of the " Fantasy " class.

Cabins and onboard facilities

The Carnival Elation was designed by the naval architect Joseph Farcus under the motto " composers and compositions ." The floor plans of the decks are similar to the other ships in the "Fantasy " class. The ship can accommodate 2,052 passengers in 1,026 cabins of different categories of regular usage. Of these, 54 suites, 564 cabins has sea views. In contrast to the more modern ships type most accommodations on the Carnival Elation are housed in the large-volume hull. Restaurants and entertainment venues are located in the relatively flat structures. Only 26 balcony cabins and eight interior cabins are situated on the " Verandah " deck.

The entrance area of the Carnival Elation with the six -story atrium is above the accommodation areas on the " Empress " deck. It is equipped among other things with two panoramic elevators and is closed by a glass dome on the altitude of the sun deck. The main restaurants are located amidships and in the stern area of the "Atlantic" decks. In between is the kitchen area. The main theater ( " The Mikado " ) in the bow section draws on Japanese style elements and offers two levels of space for more than 1,200 spectators. In the back of the promenade deck of the " Cole Porter Club" is a further stage. In addition, the ship with various bars, lounges, a library and a casino is equipped.

The wellness area on the " Sports" deck covers an area of about 11,000 square meters and offers a gym, sauna and massage rooms. As part of the modernization area was on the Carnival Elation also a " Serenity" set, which is reserved exclusively for adults.
