History

Construction, transfer and deployment

On 1 January 1999, the owner company, Carnival Corporation & plc in the Finnish Kvaerner Masa Yards AB ordered (now STX Finland Cruise Oy) in Helsinki her second cruise ship the "Spirit " class. In the winter of 2000, the ship was laid as Carnival Pride Yard No. 500 at Kiel. By the end of March 2001 was flooded the dry dock and the body shop to the fitting of the yard are transferred. The test runs on the Baltic Sea was successfully completed in October 2001. On 12 December 2001, the Carnival Pride was delivered to the operator of Carnival Cruise Lines. At the same time was also flooding the building dock of another cruise ship the "Spirit " class, the Carnival Legend. Following the transfer of the home port Port Canaveral, the Carnival Pride completed her first cruise to the Western Caribbean between 30 December 2001 and 5 January 2002. First captain of the ship was Claudio Cupisci. The naming ceremony was performed on January 7, 2002 by U.S. astronaut Dr. Tamara Jernigan in Fort Lauderdale.

Use

After the Carnival Pride, first in Fort Lauderdale (Port Canaveral ) was stationed, it was to Long Beach (California ) moved to drive to destinations on the U.S. and Mexican west coast. In the spring of 2009, she was briefly out of Miami starting in the Caribbean on the go. Since the end of April 2009, it is located in Baltimore ( Maryland) and runs from the South Locust Point Cruise Terminal on cruises to the Caribbean.

Machinery, propulsion and operation and maintenance

Energy supply

The Carnival Pride is equipped with a diesel-electric machinery which supplies the entire ship with electric power and process heat. To ensure the high reliability, the six diesel generator sets are divided into two independent groups. The motors are low-emission 9-cylinder 4-stroke turbo diesel in-line engines of the type Wärtsilä 9L46D. They are equipped with common- rail injection and produce under all operating conditions barely visible exhaust. Each motor is coupled to a brushless synchronous generator, which feeds an electrical power of 14,405 kVA to the high voltage vehicle electrical system ( three -phase alternating current, 11 kV, 60 Hz). Two Drive type ACS6000 supply the propeller motors (3 -phase alternating current, 1570 volts, variable frequency), three other converters provide the energy for the rest of the vehicle power supply (3 -phase alternating current, 440 volts, 60 Hz) ready. The electrical system of the ship was designed and built by ABB.

Drive

The drive of the Carnival Pride consists of two built- in rear, 360 ° rotating propeller gondolas of the type ABB " Azipod ". It is one of the first cruise ships that were equipped with this technology. This drive provides a very smooth ride and low vibration levels on board. In each gondola is an air-cooled 3- phase synchronous motor with double winding, of a capacity of 17.6 MW ( approximately 23.940 hp) directly to a 4-blade fixed propeller in forward-facing direction with a diameter of 5.60 m transfers. With a propeller speed of up to 133/min, the Carnival Pride has a top speed of 24 knots. The service speed is 18 to 22 knots. For maneuvering in ports and at low speeds three transverse thrusters the Norwegian manufacturer Brunvoll are installed in the bow. They work with controllable pitch propellers with constant speed and afford each 1,883 kW (approx. 2,560 hp). To roll damping the ship is equipped with a pair of Rolls- Royce fin stabilizers.

Industrial Engineering

The waste heat of the machinery is used as process heat, among others, for the treatment of fresh water on board. The six heat exchanger in the exhaust system of diesel engines produce about 15 tons of steam per hour. They are supported by two oil- fired plants, which may additionally provide approximately 26 tonnes of steam per hour. Fresh water is produced by a desalination plant, which consists of two evaporators and a reverse osmosis system.

The facilities for waste disposal are installed in the lower deck and consist of two shredding for combustible and non-combustible, each dry waste. Unsorted waste is crushed in two high- shredding and then pressed. The two incinerators develop a thermal power of 1,400 kW. Waste glass is sorted by color and further processed by disposal on shore.

The entire technology of the ship, navigation and control is implemented and monitored by an installed on the bridge system (IBS, Integrated Bridge System).

Equipment

Cabins and onboard facilities

On the 12 passenger decks of the Carnival Pride are 1,062 cabins that can accommodate up to 2,680 passengers at full occupancy. More than 70 % of dwellings are outside cabins of which nearly 80 % have a balcony. The "Junior", "Ocean" - and "Vista" suites are located on different decks at the rear. The six " Grand " suites are located amidships on the " Empress " deck and have a private hot tub.

The interior of the Carnival Pride was designed by the naval architect Joseph Farcus under the theme "Icons of Beauty " (Eng. icons of beauty ) with reference to the Italian Renaissance. The center of the ship is the 10 -storey "Renaissance" - atrium with a 11 foot reproduction of the painting "The Triumph of Galatea ' by Raphael. The atrium is closed by a red integrated into the contour of the chimney glass dome. About three panoramic elevators to reach the upper deck. A total of 15 lifts are installed. In front of the ship is provided with the Indian-style decoration is " Taj Mahal " Theatre. It extends over two decks, has 1,167 seats and is equipped with advanced stage, lighting and sound equipment. Directly below the theater is the "Butterflies Lounge" with a small stage. The two-story discotheque " Beauties " is located in the stern of the ship. The design of the jazz clubs "Starry Night" (German Starry Night ) is reminiscent of the eponymous painting by Vincent van Gogh. The equipment of the " Ivory Bar " refers to the Japanese ivory carving. The library is dedicated to Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Prize.

The main restaurant "Normandie" in the stern of the ship on two decks provides space for 1,250 guests. When designing Joe Farcus oriented to the stylistic elements of the famous Normandie passenger liner from the 1930s. In a separately partitioned area, the " Captain's Club", see on special occasions 86 people. On the " Lido " deck is the buffet restaurant " Mermaid 's Grille ", whose ceiling is decorated with sculptures of mermaids. From here you can reach the restaurant " David 's Supper Club " via a sweeping staircase directly below the glass dome of the atrium.

On the " Lido " deck there are three salt water pools and three hot tubs. The pools are named after characters from Greek mythology ( "Venus ", " Apollo " and " Poseidon "). The eponymous statues at the pools were created by the Italian artist Katia Tasselli. The rear pool area can be covered with a movable glass roof. On the " Sports" deck there is a small children's pool. The spa and fitness area ( " Nautica Spa" ) of the ship is equipped with saunas, among other things, various exercise equipment and another hot tub covers almost 1,350 square feet on two decks. A 22 m long water slide connects the " sport deck " with the sun deck.

The public areas also feature

  • Various lounges
  • A casino
  • A chapel
  • A shopping area with various shops
  • Entertainment and play areas for children and adolescents

Lifeboats

The Carnival Pride has six tender boats (length: about 11 m), and twelve motorized lifeboats (length about 9.75 m ), which are designed for every 150 passengers. In addition, the ship has 26 life rafts with a capacity of 35 people. Overall, the lifeboats can accommodate 3,610 passengers.
