Charlie Gardiner (ice hockey)

Charles Robert " Chuck" Gardiner ( born December 31, 1904 in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, † June 13, 1934 in Winnipeg, Manitoba ) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played from 1927 to 1934 for the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League.

Career

Born in Scotland, Gardiner grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In the late 20s and the early 30s he was probably the best goalie in the NHL. Its excellent performance crowned the fearless and charismatic "Chuck" in his seventh season in 1934 as captain of the Chicago Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup. Triumphantly he left the ice and never returned.

In the summer he died with just 29 years in his native Winnipeg a brain tumor.

In 1945 he was honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
