Chênedouit

Chênedouit is a commune with 167 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Orne in Basse-Normandie region.

Geography

Chênedouit located 17 kilometers northeast of the town of Flers. The municipality is crossed by the streams Maufy and Guesnerie. In the community there is still a maritime climate with moderate summer.

The place is located on a granite plateau. Chênedouit is located in a Bocagelandschaft why 750 hectares of its territory are grazing. Another 90 hectares are forest, 39 hectares are used for agriculture and 14 hectares are cultivated.

History and Culture

From around 450 BC, the region was settled by the Celts, until it was occupied by the Romans. In the early Middle Ages ruled the Franks and later the Swedes. The first mention of the place in 1402 under the name Chesneduit. The name evolved over Chennedouit in 1762 to Chêne- Douit the time of the French Revolution. 1831 was the place its present name. The place name is composed of the words Chêne (French for oak) and Douit what waterhole means.

The church today Chênedouit was taken on January 23, 1822 by the union of the previously existing municipalities Chênedouit (366 inhabitants in 1821 ), Méguillaume (227 inhabitants) and Le Repas (98 inhabitants).

In the district of Le Repas the Château du Repas is, a feudal castle, the 1605-1615 during the reign of King Louis XIII. arose. Situated on a hilltop castle is now privately owned and is classified as a monument historique since 1967.
