Chris Cannon

Christopher Black Cannon ( born October 20, 1950 in Salt Lake City, Utah) is an American politician. Between 1997 and 2009 he represented the third electoral district of the state of Utah in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Background and Career

Chris Cannon comes from a politically prominent family in Utah. His brother Joe was chairman of the Republican Party in Utah. His great-grandfather, George Q. Cannon represented 1873-1882 Utah Territory as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives. Even former U.S. Senator Frank J. Cannon is one of his relatives. Chris Cannon visited at Harvard University until 1974, the Brigham Young University and then to 1975, the Harvard School of Business. This was followed by a law degree, which he completed again at Brigham Young University until 1980. Between 1980 and 1996 he worked as a lawyer and businessman. He was a millionaire. Between 1983 and 1986 he also worked as a lawyer for the Ministry of Interior and from 1992 to 1994 he was treasurer of the Republicans in Utah.

Congressman

1996 Chris Cannon was selected in the third constituency of Utah in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he broke on 3 January 1997 from the Democrats Bill Orton, whom he had defeated in the election. In the following elections, he was confirmed in each case in his office so that he was able to complete a total of six legislative terms in Congress between January 1997 and January 3, 2009 3rd. In his re- election he always reached absolute majority of between 58 % and 77 % of the vote.

In 1999 he was one of the prosecutors in the impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton. He was a member of the Committee on the reform of government and in some sub-committees. In advance of the midterm elections of 2008, Cannon was defeated in the primaries of his party Jason Chaffetz. His time in Congress was not entirely free of controversy. Thus, for example, was his commitment to his brother and his business interests in 2006 controversial.
