Elmer O. Leatherwood

Elmer O. Leatherwood ( born September 4, 1872 Pike County, Ohio, † December 24, 1929 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1921 and 1929 he represented the second electoral district of the state of Utah in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and rise in Utah

Elmer Leatherwood attended the public schools of his home. In 1888 he moved to Emporia, Kansas. There he attended until 1894, the Kansas State Normal School. After studying law at the University of Wisconsin and his admission to the bar he began to work in 1901 in his new profession in Utah's capital, Salt Lake City. Between 1908 and 1916 he was district attorney for the third judicial district of Utah.

Leatherwood was a member of the Republican Party. In 1924 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention, was nominated to the President Calvin Coolidge for a further term. Leatherwood was at that time also president of several companies in the mining industry.

Congressman

In the congressional elections of 1920 Leatherwood Elmer was elected for the second electoral district of Utah in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he took over from the March 4, 1921 James Henry Mays. After he was confirmed in the following elections each in his office, Leatherwood remained there until his death in 1929 the Congress. At times he was Chairman of the Committee for the control of expenditures for public buildings.
