Importance

Cruising with Ruben & the Jets is the fourth album by the Mothers of Invention. Frank Zappa - born in 1940 and grew up with the doo-wop music of the 1950s - loved and collected records of this genre. Some of his first compositions such as Memories of El Monte were doo-wop songs. Cruising with Ruben & the Jets is a collection of music, with Zappa composed almost all of the pieces. For inexperienced listeners sounding songs like Cheap Thrills, Jelly Roll Gum Drop Deseri and as average doo-wop songs. Other hand, more accurate listening reveals unusual chord progressions, Stravinsky quotes and the banal comic texts - all packaged in four-part harmony singing and linear three chords on the piano. Some pieces from the debut album Freak Out! have been re- arranged, but also old material from the period before the Mothers was prepared for the album. Pieces like Love of My Life and You Did not Try to Call Me were played often live Zappa even later.

Reception

Cruising with Ruben & the Jets was an " in every respect unique recording " which was not for the uninitiated listener, however, was the American critic John Alroy. The German rock journalist Volker Rebell, however, saw it as " a recording project with which he massively squinted [ Zappa, note] by charts listing ". Reviewer François Couture warned newcomers to Zappa 's oeuvre, this album is for " definitely not the best place ." Barry Miles noted the " very authentic " sounding album have irritated many Zappa fans who would have thought Zappa wanted to make fun of the doo-wop music. Miles: "But actually was Cruising with Ruben & the Jets ... a labor of love. "

Achievements

In contrast to the previously published albums of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention pieces were played by Cruising with Ruben & the Jets frequently by U.S. radio stations. Perhaps the disc jockeys had thought it were a record of the group " Ruben and the Jets "; maybe they had overlooked on the album cover to simply existing in a balloon regard to the actual performer. There, the question is asked, " Is this the Mothers of Invention recording under a different name in a load- ditch attempt to get Their cruddy music on the radio? " ( " Is this a last-ditch attempt by the Mothers of Invention, below by a plate get played their uncouth music on the radio a different name? ") the album missed the top 100 in the U.S. charts just barely.
