During the NHL Entry Draft in 1984, he was selected in the second round to 28th position of the Detroit Red Wings. After the defender one year at the Medicine Hat Tigers and the Adirondack Red Wings - the former farm team in the American Hockey League 's Detroit Red Wings - had played, he was inducted into the 1988/89 season in the professional cadres of the Red Wings. He played 57 games in the National Hockey League, where he scored 13 points scorer. In the following season, Doug Houda received more ice age and completed 73 NHL games in which he scored eleven points scorer. In the 1990/91 season he was after a few games at first for farm team, the Adirondack Red Wings shut off, and yet in the same season for the Hartford Whalers. There, he played the majority of games and belonged to the permanent staff.

After less than a year in Los Angeles, the management of the Kings sent the defender to the Buffalo Sabres. For the Sabres, he could not prevail, and after two years he moved to the New York Islanders. After 70 NHL games he graduated from there in the first season, he was awarded the following year less ice age and Houda was transferred to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Since he lacked consistency, he was replaced in the following years several times between the teams. Neither the Detroit Red Wings still at the Buffalo Sabres, he found his form. Therefore Houda played in the last years of his career from 1999 to 2003 a majority with the Rochester Americans in the AHL, where he was one of the best players of the team and showed constant performance. After the end of the season 2002/ 03 he ended his active career.
