Dwight W. Burney

Dwight Willard Burney ( born January 7, 1892 in Hartington, Cedar County, Nebraska, † March 10 1987 in Mesa, Arizona ) was an American politician and 1960-1961 31 Governor of the State of Nebraska.

Life

Dwight Burney visited the Hartington High School and later to 1912, the University of South Dakota. He then worked as a farmer and rancher in Hartington. At the same time he was still working as a primary school teacher. Between 1945 and 1957, was the Republican member of the Nebraska Legislature. In the years 1956, 1958 and 1960, he was elected lieutenant governor in each of his state. After the death of the incumbent Governor Ralph G. Brooks on September 9, 1960 Lieutenant Governor Burney fell to his office. He had to end the ongoing until January 5, 1961 his predecessor's term. During his tenure, the sales tax in Nebraska has increased. Otherwise, his short reign was uneventful.

After the end of his governorship Burney was lieutenant governor again. A post he held until 1965. Afterwards he went back to his private interests. He died in 1987 at his winter home in Arizona. Dwight Burney was married twice and had four children.
