Emlichheim is a municipality in the district of Bentheim in Lower Saxony ( Germany ) and the seat of the velvet municipality of the same name.

Geography

Emlichheim ( Low German Emmelkamp ) is located near the German -Dutch border. The town is bordered by the river Vecht and the north by the Coevorden - Piccardie Channel to the south. The municipality is the administrative seat of the velvet municipality Emlichheim with communities Emlichheim, Hoogstede, Laar and rings. In recent years Emlichheim experienced massive growth, mainly due to the influx of Dutch national.

History

Emlichheim exists at least since the time of Charlemagne. In a document from the year 1312, the place is mentioned under the name Emminchem. In colloquial dialect to this day the name Emmelkamp is common. The High German name Emlichheim derived from the original Low German forms Emminchem or Emmen home. Since the time of the Thirty Years War, the German high in the county of Bentheim was used for official documents. Officials said the name from Low German used until then was translated into German as high Emlichheim. Due to the close cultural and economic ties with the Netherlands was, especially in the lower county, since the 16th century, the Dutch, the common transport, churches and written language. Until the twenties of the 19th century Dutch was used as a first language in the schools of the county. The vernacular was the local Low German dialect, which was heavily influenced by the Dutch written language. In the local vernacular sat down with time by the shape Emlenkamp for Emlichheim. About the vernacular this form then passed in the Dutch case. Economy

In Emlichheim the Emsland Group is established with her daughter Emsland-Starke as the largest European starch producer. Emlichheim is on the main road 403 Ochtrup about Nordhorn to Coevorden in the Netherlands.

The place is connected to the rail network of Bentheim railroad. There is a very lively freight; the rail passenger transport ( regional rail ) was set in 1974. Structures
