Evgeni Platov

Yevgeny Platov Arkadyevitch (Russian: Евгений Аркадьевич Платов; born August 7, 1967 in Odessa, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union ) is a former Russian figure skater, who started ice dancing for the Soviet Union, the United team and Russia.

Competitive career

Platov won from 1984 to 1986 on the side of Jelena Krikanowa three times in a row the Junior World Championships in ice dance.

On Senior level was his first Eistanzpartnerin from 1987 Larissa Fjodorinowa. With it, he finished sixth in his World Cup debut in 1989.

1989 brought him coach Natalia Dubova together with Oksana Grishchuk. Three months later they reached the podium as third parties in the Soviet championships. Their joint debut at World and European Championships, she finished 1990 at the fifth place respectively.

In 1992 Grishchuk and Platov were the first time when Soviet masters. Both at the European Championships as well as the World Championships, they won their first bronze medals at these tournaments. Her debut at the Olympics they finished in Albertville in fourth place.

In the fall of 1992, Natalia and Gennadi Linitschuk Karponossow new coach of Grishchuk and Platov. As reigning Russian champions the ice dance 1993 Vice European Champion and Vice World Champion.

In 1994 they were again Vice-European Champion. At the Olympic Games in Lillehammer Grishchuk and Platov won the gold medal. They defeated the reamateurisierten Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, who were also reigning European champion and the then reigning world champion Maja Ussowa and Alexander Schulin. In Japanese Chiba Grishchuk and Platov were a little later for the first time world champion.

Grishchuk and Platov missed due to injury much of the season 1994/95, including the European Championship. However, at the World Championships in Birmingham they could take back and defended their championship title.

1996 European Champion Grishchuk and Platov in Sofia for the first time. In Edmonton they were world champion again. Then Tatiana Tarasova was their new coach. They missed the first half of the season 1996/97, but returned back in time in Paris in 1997 to defend their European Championship title. In Lausanne, it became the fourth consecutive world champion.

1998 won Grishchuk and Platov in Milan for the third consecutive year at the European Championships. At the Olympic Games in Nagano, they defended their title and were once again Olympic champion. After they finished their competitive career.

In the period 1994-1998 Grishchuk and Platov won 20 contests in a row. They are the only ice dance, which was twice win gold at the Olympics. Grishchuk and Platov combined speed and sophisticated elements and showed their mastery of many different styles of dance.

After her competitive career ran Grishchuk and Platov together in various shows. Then she decided to become a partner exchange with their former rivals Maja Ussowa and Alexander Schulin. Nine years after the end of her career Platov and Oksana " Pasha " Grishchuk first emerged again on together in the annual Christmas show on the Red Square in Moscow. In 2008 they came together in Nagano to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their Olympic victory.

Coaching career

Platov assisted from 2002 to 2004 together with Maja Ussowa his former coach Tatiana Tarasova in Simsbury, Connecticut. In this role, he helped to lead Shizuka Arakawa to the world title in 2004. He also briefly worked with Sasha Cohen and Johnny Weir.

In autumn 2005, Platov moved to New Jersey and was assistant coach of his former rival Alexander Schulin. Thus he was involved in the success of Tatjana Nawka and Roman Kostomarow. As Schulin returned to Russia, was Platov coach on their own. His students included, inter alia, Sinead and John Kerr, and Galit Chait and Sergei Sakhnovsky

Platov working at the moment (2009) as a trainer at the Princeton Sports Center in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey.

Personal

Platov 1991 married the former figure skater and actress Maria Anikanowa later, settled in 1997 but divorced again.
