Falköping Municipality

Falköping is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Västra Götaland County and the historic province of Västergötland. The main town of the municipality is Falköping.

Geography

In the northern part of the municipality lies the southern foothills of the mountain Billingen. On its eastern side the places Borgunda lie ( about 25 km northeast of Falköping ) and Stenstorp, the birthplace of physicist and Nobel laureate Gustaf Dalén, whose life and work in a museum ( Dalén Museum) is described. West of the Bill Willingen is located Hornborgasjön, one of the most famous bird lakes in Sweden. In Bjurum is the bird station Trandansen. Adjacent to it is also two manors, Stora Bjurum and lock Dagsnäs.

The area around the city Falköping is shaped by the ice age. Mesas ( Mösseberg, Ålleberg, Gerumsberg others), moraines and meltwater Delta have formed a hilly landscape. The area was settled early, whereupon numerous tombs of the Stone Age and Bronze Age point. This area forms the core of Falbygden, which is one of the most distinctive Neolithic culture areas in Europe. In Ekehagens Forntidsby ( Ekehagens Stone Age village ) in Åsarp about 20 km south of Falköping attempts have been made to reconstruct forms of settlement from the Stone Age.

In Åsle, 15 km east of Falköping, a battle between Albrecht of Mecklenburg and his recruited army in Germany and later Queen Margareta took place on February 24, 1389. Margareta's victory led to the formation of the Kalmar Union. In Åsle is also a poor village from the 18th/19th. Century, which was inhabited until the 1930s and today is the open-air museum.

Economy

The municipality is located in a Falköping intensively used agricultural area. Agriculture and food industries are important economic activities. Larger industrial enterprises are located about 12 km south of Falköping ( Kinnarps ) in the city Falköping, in Floby about 30 km east of Falköping (Volvo ) and Kinnarp.
