Figure skating at the 1928 Winter Olympics

In the II Olympic Winter Games in 1928 in St. Moritz three competitions were held in figure skating. Venue was the ice rink Badrutts Park. It was a natural ice rink of 40 x 35 m with 4700 spectators.

The competition consisted of a duty and a five-minute freestyle. The performances were judged by seven adjudicators. Among them was Eduard Engelmann, the founder of the Vienna Ice Skating Club. Of the 17 participants, one ( Werner Rittberger ) gave up due to illness.

It was like four years ago to a duel between Gillis Grafström and Willy Böckl. Despite a knee injury Grafström won both compulsory as well as freestyle and defended his title in 1920 and 1924 and thus became the only figure skater until today, who won three Olympic titles in the men's competition.

Fourth was the 18- year-old Karl Schäfer, who should be the next two times Olympic champion. In the same year he also took part in the Summer Olympic Games in the breaststroke.

Sonja Henie was the youngest ever Winter Olympic gold medalist in an individual discipline with 15 years and 315 days. This record was their first in 1998 by the US-American Tara Lipinski (15 years and 225 days), also decreased in the figure skating. Fritzi Burger won the silver medal. The bronze medal went to the US-American Beatrix Loughran, who had already won silver four years earlier.

The competition consisted of only a five minute freestyle. Among the seven adjudicators was Heinrich Burger, who had won in 1908 with Anna Hubler the first pair of running Olympic victory. A total of 13 couples participated.

The French Andrée Joly and Pierre Brunet, who had won the World Cup for the first time in 1926, were for the first time Olympic champion.
