Career

South Africa (1975-1978)

Since his father, the former England footballer Roy Bailey emigrated to South Africa, Gary Bailey spent the first years of his playing career at the South African clubs Cape Town City and Wits University.

Manchester United (1978-1987)

In 1978 he moved to the English first division club Manchester United, where he became the successor of longtime goalkeeper Alex Stepney. His professional debut in English football gave Bailey on November 18, 1978 in a 2-0 home win over United Ipswich Town. During the Football League First Division 1978/79 he played seven more games and finished the season in ninth place in the table. In his first season he moved into the final of the FA Cup 1978/79, lost this game but with 2:3 against Arsenal. The following season, the team and the goalkeeper Gary Bailey was runner-up behind Liverpool. A good placement again two years later managed the club in the First Division 1981/82 in third place. In the UEFA Cup 1982/83 the team failed, however, as two years previously in the first round. Addition to a renewed third place in the league, United moved to Gordon McQueen, Bryan Robson, Frank Stapleton and Bailey in the final of the FA Cup 1982/83 and there defeated Brighton & Hove Albion (2-2 and 4-0 in the replay ). Previously Manchester had against Liverpool with 1:2 lost the finals of the English League Cup 1982/83 and thus a double success missed in both English cup competitions. In Europe Cup Winners' Cup 1983/84 the club relocated to a success in the quarter-final against FC Barcelona (0-2 and 3-0) in the semi-final against Juventus to Michel Platini and lost there after a 1-1 draw in the return leg home game in Turin with 1:2. Also in the UEFA Cup 1984/85 the team did not succeed in the place in the final after a surprising Viertelfinalaus against eventual finalists Videoton FC. This remained for the subsequent years of the last international appearance for United since all English clubs had been excluded as a result of the Heysel disaster of the European Cup. For Bailey succeeded with his teammates Gordon Strachan and Mark Hughes his second title in the FA Cup in 1984/85. In the final, United defeated Everton with a goal from Norman Whiteside in the 110th minute 1-0 after extra time. After a knee injury in a training match during the 1986 World Cup, Bailey missed much of the 1986/87 season, ended his career and then returned to South Africa. In 1988, he started once again making a comeback at the Kaizer Chiefs, before 1990 finally ended his playing career.

English national team ( 1985)

Gary Bailey debuted March 26, 1985 in a 2-1 friendly win against Ireland in the England team. On 9 June 1985, he played the host of the next World Cup Mexico his second international match and lost 0-1. A year later he was appointed coach Bobby Robson in the English World Cup squad, but remained behind goalkeeper Peter Shilton and Chris Woods substitute only third-choice goalkeeper. England was eliminated in the quarterfinals to eventual champions Argentina.
