1978–79 in English football

The Football League First Division 1978/79 was the 80th season of the Football League First Division as the highest English football league. It began on August 19, 1978 and ended on May 18, 1979. FC Liverpool won with eight points behind defending champions Nottingham Forest now his eleventh championship. All three climbers Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton FC and Bolton Wanderers could get the class; instead had to play the course in the Second Division Queens Park Rangers, Birmingham City and Chelsea. These three clubs should be replaced the following season by the three newly promoted second division Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion and Stoke City.

A total of 486 players were used, with Liverpool the least and Chelsea with 31 mustered 15 most players in league games. 126 newcomers were offset by 90 footballers who most recently came into play in the 1978/79 season.
